Description.
As Australia’s most diverse broadcaster, the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) holds a unique place in the Australian media landscape, inspiring all Australians to explore, respect and celebrate our diverse world and in doing so, contributes to an inclusive and cohesive society.
As a Senior User Interface Designer, I assisted the SBS Experience Design team with UI design implementation of SBS News app Version 5.0 which was available for download (iOS and Android devices) on Friday 10 December 2021.
This formed the foundation for digital experience parity between the News website + News app as SBS continuously rolled out new features, including customisation capability in 2022.
Brief & Idea.
The brief for this project was to continue UI design work for SBS News App (Version 5.0). This included a new onboarding features series, new icons, and dark mode mock-ups.
I took temporary Design Lead on the UI design aspects, collaborating with the EDS Mobile Team on technical design requirements, quality assurance, and user testing.
As part of this release, I created onboarding slides highlighting the newest features. These features included new landing pages titled Latest News, Explore Topics, Watch Now, as well as an Enable Notifications.
Three design concepts were presented to testing users. The testers on Usertesting.com gave valuable insights on all three styles and gave detailed descriptions. From testing it was revealed that the best UI solution was the third design; a combination of vector and on-screen realism.
Result.
The successful app design seamlessly blended functionality, aesthetics, and intuitive user experiences. Through thorough research, wire-framing, and prototyping, I created visually stunning and user-friendly app design.
My iterative design process, coupled with team feedback, ensured continuous improvement, resulting in an app that continues to engage, delight, and drive user satisfaction and business success.
Since the launch of SBS News App v5.0 consumption hours increased by 10,000 hours from the week prior to launch and unique visitors increased by 20,000 views in the same period.
